Why use fleece as cage bottom for guinea pig?

I noticed a lot of people are using fleece blankets as the cage bottom for guinea pigs. Why is this? Also, if I have a cage where one half is fleece and the other is bedding, will the guinea pig know to only pee/poop on the side with the bedding? What are the advantages and disadvantages of fleece versus the traditional bedding? Thanks.
